From Tanzania to Iowa: Israel Mockray’s Journey with our Synod Community
From July through September 2025, the Southeastern Iowa Synod welcomed Israel Mockray from the Mwanga Diocese, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Throughout his time with us, Israel immersed himself in the vibrant life of our synod through EWALU Bible Camp and congregational visits. Thank you to Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, Luther Memorial Church in Des Moines, Peace Lutheran Church in Pella, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Ames, and to EWALU Bible Camp for hosting and welcoming Israel. As Israel has now returned home safely, we invited him to reflect on his recent visit. In his words,
My visit to Iowa and the Southeastern Iowa Synod was a deeply meaningful and unforgettable experience. It was a blessing to visit congregations across the synod, share my testimony, and speak about the unity that has transformed my life. This companionship has shaped my journey in profound ways, and I felt honored to stand before the people who have been instruments of God’s grace in that transformation.
One of the most powerful experiences of this visit was witnessing how strongly congregations value the companion synod partnership. Speaking with pastors, leaders, and members who hold this unity dearly helped me see our companionship with new depth. Their commitment, ideas, and hopes for the future inspired me to share those conversations with Bishop Current, Bishop Mono, and Bishop Mjema into a booklet called Imani Moja: A Vision for Partnership, which I pray will strengthen and renew our shared mission.
Although Tanzania and Southeastern Iowa are separated by great differences—culture, language, society, and even climate—I was reminded that we share something far greater: our faith in Christ. Across all these differences, the Holy Spirit makes us one. The same songs of worship, the same prayers, and the same confession of Christ unite our hearts as one family in God.
Throughout my visit, I had the joy of sharing my personal story, especially how God opened the door for me to serve at Ewalu Bible Camp in 2019, during a time when my life was marked by illness, discouragement, and uncertainty. Through that opportunity, God repaired what was broken in me and gave me a new beginning. Sharing this testimony felt important, because it is a living witness to how this companionship brings healing and hope.
I was humbled by how warmly people received my preaching and presentations. Many shared how the messages encouraged, inspired, or challenged them in their faith. I give all glory to God, who allowed my words to be used for His people and His Church.
What I learned from the congregations and leaders of this synod can be summarized in one word: love. A deep, sincere love for God, for one another, and for their partners in Tanzania. I was welcomed not as a stranger, but as a brother. Their hospitality, generosity, and genuine care showed me the true image of Christ at work among His people.
As I return home, I will continue to partner with the churches in strengthening this unity. The experiences, conversations, and wisdom I gained from this visit will guide me as I support the ministries of companionship. I am fully committed to helping the vision we have shaped together grow into reality.
Finally, I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to the Southeastern Iowa Synod and every congregation that welcomed me. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and love. I pray that God remembers your ministry and blesses you richly for all you do to sustain this unity. I remain ready to serve as a volunteer and ambassador for this companionship, and I hope to continue collaborating with churches—including those I was unable to visit this time.
With gratitude,
Israel Mockray
