Synod Council Meeting Summary—July 2026

The Southeastern Iowa Synod Council held its July meeting on July 25, 2026. This was the first meeting with new members elected at Synod Assembly. Bishop Current led a devotion using Martin Luther's Small Catechism -Apostles' Creed. Keith Jones, Vice President, provided an educational session explaining the purpose and structure of the Synod Council, including its role in representing the Synod between full assemblies and working with the Office of the Bishop on various duties such as budget development and care for the roster. Bishop Current and Pastor Leann Stubbs provided a mission moment about Iglesia Community de Emaus, our Spanish-language worshiping community in Davenport and the Quad Cities Latine Ministries. A recent ministry review recommended ending Iglesia Camino de Emaus due to lack of development. This ministry will end in January 2027. The Quad Cities Latine Ministries will continue with Pastor Pilar and the community of San Jose Obrero, Moline, IL.

The meeting continued through the agenda including roster updates, candidacy decisions, officer reports, and two items of business related to Campus Ministry. The Synod Assembly resolution related to Campus Ministry was forwarded to the Synod Council for action. The Council did not support the resolve related to a percentage of potential surplus being allocated in advance to campus ministry. The Council did support the resolve to encourage congregations in the synod to have an annual campus ministry Sunday to encourage education and fundraising. In addition, the Council voted for our annual draw from the synod endowment and an annual allocation from a Foundation to support campus ministry at ISU and UI.
