Peace be with You–Prayer Shawl & Quilt Invitation
As we prepare for the 2026 Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly, we are inviting congregations across the synod to help us surround this gathering in prayer, comfort, and peace blessing. Our theme, “Peace be with You,” will be embodied through the gift of handmade prayer shawls and lap quilts; creations that offer color, warmth, and care from the hands and hearts of people across our synod.
We are deeply aware of the creativity and dedication that lives within our congregations especially among those who knit, crochet, and sew. Whether your congregation already has a prayer shawl or quilting ministry, or if individuals would like to begin, we celebrate the beauty and comfort that your artwork brings.
As we prayed about this theme, we wondered: How might we embody peace in our midst? We were drawn to the vision of a vibrant display: an array of handmade pieces, each one a gift of peace, surrounding our Assembly in tangible reminders of Christ’s presence. What a lovely and powerful symbol of community and care!
Each shawl or quilt may become a personal keepsake for a voting member or participant, or they may choose to leave it at the Assembly, where it will be passed on through our synod to organizations or individuals in need, extending peace beyond the event itself.
Here’s how your congregation can participate:
Start creating now! Encourage individuals and groups in your congregation to begin knitting, crocheting, or sewing prayer shawls, lap quilts, or quilts.
Make a commitment. Please let us know how many pieces your congregation intends to contribute. This will help us plan well for the display and distribution.
Delivery options: More specific details will be shared in the coming months, but congregations will have the option to:
Deliver items directly to the synod office before the Assembly,
Bring them to the Assembly site at check-in, or
Coordinate with a synod staff member for pickup in certain regions.
Let these creations be both a gift of peace and a work of love. We are excited to see how the Spirit will move through this effort, and we thank you in advance for the joy and generosity you will share with our synod.
Stay tuned for updates, deadlines, and drop-off instructions in future newsletters.
Peace be with you.
