Report of the Reference & Counsel Committee

Attention, open in a new window. PDF | Print | E-mail

In accordance with S7.51.04 of the Southeastern Iowa Synod Constitution, the four resolutions submitted by the March 4 deadline and reviewed by the Reference and Counsel Committee are included in this section of the Pre-Assembly book for your review prior to the 2008 Assembly. We trust that assembly and congregation members will find it helpful to consider these resolutions prior to May 16 when the Assembly convenes.

The Reference and Counsel Committee convened via conference call prior to the publication of this report, and each resolution received careful consideration from the committee members. The committee has worked to clarify content with the consent of the submitter(s). The committee may, as a part of the process, recommend adoption, recommend adoption with proposed amendment, recommend defeat, or recommend referral to another entity. The committee may also offer a substitute resolution. Where decisions have been made about recommendations, these are also printed for your information.

If you have an additional action you would like the 2008 Assembly to consider, the Reference and Counsel Committee will be able to report your request. Please put your request in the form of a resolution and forward it to Lorraine Jordan ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) at the synod office for preparation. If agenda time and other factors permit, the Assembly may be able to consider and make a recommendation on your proposal. Otherwise, it will be reported to the Assembly as information and referred to the Synod Council. (Following the Report of our Committee, the resolution may be taken up for consideration if two-thirds of the voting members vote to do so.)

For assistance with a resolution or further information, you may contact any of the Reference and Counsel Committee members via their congregation. These include: The Rev. T. Edwards Breed of St. Andrew in Cedar Rapids and Ms. Jennie LeGates of St. Andrew’s in Ames, serving 2008-2010; The Rev. Linda Keeter Schultz of Immanuel in Camanche and Mr. Doug Thiel of Christ the Servant ministry in Corydon, serving for 2008-2009; The Rev. Dave Nerdig of Faith in Clive and Ms. Marsha Witte of Faith in Calamus, serving for 2008.

As a committee it has been a pleasure to work together to serve the purposes of the Assembly. We hope you will find our service of assistance in the process of discernment concerning God’s call to us as a synod.

Respectfully submitted,

Ms. Kay Weiss
Reference & Counsel Committee 2008 Chairperson (Trinity, Burlington )
